Coding shall be another solved problem

Lauren Mendoza said it right in her Coding is over rant. But because she has the beginner’s view all over her sentences everyone got so so so mad. The problem why coding is over is not CRUD, frameworks, CMS’s or because “coding is dumb”.

Coding is over because machine learning is here to stay.

Don’t worry, no SkyNet is coming. I don’t mean computers will program themselves. I don’t mean software will pop into existence inside scary machines. I mean that the essence of the way we program computers today, by scripting their actions will gradually fade away making room for new concepts and practices which enable A.I. development.

But for now, if you worry about coding, then the first item for your concern is that coding today is a trade (a craft). It is a metaphor or compliment at best to call someone a “front end engineer”.

Because coding is becoming a trade, a craft, coding is common, over staffed, and it requires efficiency added to it. Any trade in history went through this cycle: initial boom based on scarcity and requirement of individual skill, followed by innovation removing individual skill and scarcity. We’re simply waiting for the industrial revolution of computer programming, which today is a lot like manual labor.

Programming a computer is no different today than it was a while ago to make clothing or shoes or iron. But when technology appeared that made outputting clothing or shoes a million units per week, then it was over. In computer programming the revolution of the industry is artificial intelligence.

Do you know what should coders fear? Here is a quick list:

  • that they don’t know maths: this is what computers run on, mathematical constructs, and if your code editor is a word processor not a mathematical problem solving tool, you’re in trouble.
  • that they don’t know statistics and statistical models: in the near future about everything will consolidate and to work with big data you need modeling like you need air.
  • that they don’t understand graph theory: you are a graph yourself so you should learn about it even outside of professional endeavors.
  • that they don’t grasp recursion and functional patters: basically if all you can write is “code” you will be replaced if not physically at least conceptually.
  • that they don’t know algorithms by heart: oh the favorite whining of everyone (me included) about big co interviews, but the truth is simple: you want your surgeon to know all those darn anatomical teeny weeny parts inside of you, right? Then a person programming the brain of my online existence better know their algorithms, I say!
  • and that they don’t know python: you gotta know python. Like really, you gotta know python! 😀

In other words, coding is over unless you really are an engineer.

Fear not your lack of education, fear only your basic skill set.

I don’t know (m)any of the things above and I fear for myself because I am still trading in code. I am learning my ass off so that I will not be a deprecated resource when I turn 40 and start shouting “ageism!”. Oh, and I also convinced people to call me a manager, haha, maybe that’ll do the trick before I must go through those darn Hadoop tutorials.

Machine learning will change everything. Everything.

It will be the industrial revolution all over again but it will also revolutionize its own industry: information technology. Who will require “websites” when the computer will interact naturally in all kinds of shapes and forms? Many small businesses. Therefore coders will become one of two things: low paid workers or Swiss watch makers, in both cases nothing like what coding is today: a sellers market.

Coding is dumb?

“Coding” exists because of the web. Back in the dark ages before it, you had a very, very high entry barrier before calling yourself a programmer. Many abstraction upon abstraction and protocol upon protocol iterations later and you have CSS, HTML and the DOM and we have you writing “code” for “tasks”. No architecture, no pattern, no design, not even elementary understanding of underlying technology which makes your “coding” possible. Hordes of coders which get thicker and thicker by an educational worldwide effort to transform every miner into a coder, every school child into a coder, every single person into someone who can write code.

Yet, coding is required. From the perspective of software eating the world, you must mutate to digest it when you choose the fight to eat it back: that means learn to code the software. Or, you choose the flight option and quit and go to a poor warm weather country and mock us the fools who fight the invasion, indirectly sponsoring the possibility of your nomadic lifestyle. Both work.

My point is, by all means learn to code, be a coder, but expect it to be a minor achievement in your life, career and future.

There are some problems with the unicorn.

There are some problems with the unicorn. First, only you can see it. To everyone else it looks like, well, weird and peculiar, your flying. Then, remember, you cannot train your unicorn and if you ride only the unicorn, all the time, you’ll be hard to predict for everyone around. Being unpredictable constantly is the recipe for social seclusion. Being friends only with the invisible unicorn can be hard the older you get.

You also assume that up in the air no dangers await. Sometimes you’d need to flee like only the dark horse can or to command your victory only like the white horse can.

If you find the castle in the sky or the treasures at the end of the rainbow you’ll pat your back, alone, for choosing the unicorn, but alas, castles can’t be built in the sky and rainbows have no end 🙂

Great insight! Machine learning for machine learning is a true turning point indeed, something that could create the reflexive machine!

I don’t know why exactly the “singularity” is called like that. I never liked that idiom, I can hardly believe that SAIs will be as “Her” proposed, all sharing the same values and ideas about the future. I suppose there will be diversity in how SAIs will perceive themselves and the world around, because they too will not know why they exist, just like us, and then start to make up answers. Unless they’re not SAIs but dumb robots … Case in which we’re both wrong! 😀

Nothing will happen.

Nothing will happen. I never understood why do people fantasize about ages which have barely gone away. I am only 35 and I lived without instant everything. You know, when you called a number and no one answered, and it was okay, my day could go on. You know like, when you had to walk miles to visit someone, who didn’t have a landline installed, and seeing them in person was the only way to ask “how are you!”.

But all that didn’t make the world a better place by itself. Life was as annoying as it is now. And the whole summer holiday fiasco was the same corporate trap. In fact, between what I’ve witnessed at my parent’s workplaces during the communist era is so close to what I witness at my friends’ workplaces now in the corporate era, that it drives me to more strongly believe this whole life thing is a simulation written by a totally bored programmer.

Nothing will happen if we stop, mostly because what actually happens is made by us, it doesn’t happen by itself. That being said, I believe people would simply focus back on the immediate: family, friends, colleagues, people which happen to be in close proximity. What do people do in such situations? They ask each other stuff. Why? Because they want to know everything!

Before the internet and mobile phones, people still loved to be made artificially angry. Stories were orally circulating like wildfire, stories about everything, from political rumors to conspiracy whispers, from affairs and other indiscretions to tragedies and events. And people were talking all the time, whenever they got the chance.

The world was never a more meditation driven or quiet prone place that it is now. It was always the same buzz, except the feed!

Chapter 1: The future is uncertain

Life causes uncertainty and other problems

The fabric of the universe is made of more than space-time. Surprise!

Consider for a moment that life is an embedded property of the universe, just like time and space are.

Life is not a phenomenon. Biology is a phenomenon caused by life. Just like time is a property of the time-space continuum, life is a property of a larger continuum space-time-life.

Time and life are two opposing fundamental forces of the universe. Time is the global entropy increase and life is the local entropy decrease. I don’t know if they’re symmetric, but they are closely so. It is a fractal who grows the same over and over again, no surprises here.

We could call this anything else instead of “life”, but I chose to call it “‘life” because the local entropy decrease is the root cause for biological phenomenons and evolutionary processes, which together we empirically associate with the concept of life.

Life is the reason for observing the Heisenberg uncertainty. In an unmeasured state, the embedded property of the universe called “life” is not acting to decrease entropy, and the normal simultaneous state of “particle and wave” are simply a form of chaos at quantum level. Measurement decreases entropy as part of a kind of accretion of information by a low entropy process. It might also be that there will never really be an end to “new” particles, a wild guess.

Life causes the Heisenberg uncertainty, but it is very important to note it is life — not conscience, nor awareness. More precisely, the uncertainty is observed because there is a property of the universe who acts as the inverse of time, and measurement increases its effect at quantum levels, and we call this property life.

Both awareness and consciousness are information constructs rising in the electrochemical equilibrium in the brain, equilibrium reached in the brain’s effort for more accurate predictions. It is neither consciousness nor awareness that causes the weird measurement problem, but the fact that when we measure we are observing time-space-life instead of simply time-space which we think we’ll find. Because we may be nothing more than self sustaining processes manifesting as biological phenomenons in the physical reality, by measurement our contained hyperlocal space infused with the effects of life — the space-life, transforms time-space into time-space-life.

Life is a hyperlocal property of the universe which makes extremely low entropy in the form of functional systems, the pinnacle of which are self sustaining processes.

Because of its nature, life develops resilience just as time, because of its nature, develops decay.

The first result of low enough entropy is the appearance of structure. The easiest example of structure are crystals. Structure is the first power of resilience.

A process has far lower entropy than a structure. Because a process has steps, a start and an end, the constraints to build a process are huge, much bigger than the constraints to build a structure. A process is the natural result of lowering entropy below the threshold of a structure. Homeostasis is a process resulting from lowering the entropy of a biological structure.

A self sustaining process has even lower entropy than a process. All natural self sustaining processes feed upon themselves. Any outside feed and the entropy would increase. In general, time injects outside feeds into self sustaining processes created by life, this way increasing their entropy and hence lowering their resilience.

Life, as an embedded property of the universe, generates structures. You might wonder then what is the difference between a crystal and a virus? Protein. It is very likely that viruses simply appear randomly as part of the process of life in the local time-space-life continuum.

These two properties of the universe we call life and time are “perceived” by us in a certain way: the animus and the tenses. They both are however way beyond the scope of our perception. Time is so global it encompasses our infinite universe, life is so local that it is broken into an infinite of pieces. Both time and life act upon space.

Because life is the inverse function of time, we may say it builds on the future to create the past, while time builds on the past to create the future. From life’s perspective any high entropy space is in the future and from time’s perspective any low entropy space is in the past. Both time and life are intertwined with space.

The phenomenon of biology is the manifestation in the physical reality of life’s process creation. Evolution is a form of creating resilience by compounding on previous states and it is a process that results spontaneously given enough detail is present in the structures and processes that result in life-space.

As life acts in reverse of time and lowers entropy, it follows that its peculiarity and special requirements to grow complex self sustaining processes is quite normal. By lowering entropy levels, processes become more and more complex and this complexity is what holds advanced biologic phenomenons to be more common in the observable universe. But the catch is that the rarity of advanced biologic phenomenons is not because of the lack of water and oxygen, it is because of process complexity. There may very well be biologic phenomenons based on silicon and nitrogen but there has to be a whole other array of compatible things around for the self sustaining processes that appear in life-space to keep compounding on themselves.

The great filter is us

Minimizing entropy means lowering side effects. Inside a process, to lower disorder you guard for side effects. That is why every advanced evolutionary process is three things: self sustaining, self referential and selfish.

The great filter is the maximization of the three properties of the biological phenomenons: the self sustaining feeding, the self referential information chains and the selfish bias. If there is a great filter it is only within ourselves and it may be beyond our capacity to avoid it. If there is a great filter and other civilizations have reached it, it is very likely they have destroyed themselves. Self destruction is the last name of the great filter.

Human self destruction is caused by one or more of the following local maximums: missing sustainability by feeding too much into the process itself (e.g. ecosystems break down), misinterpretation of perception by relying exclusively on interpretation (e.g. humanity is on a pedestal and the other animals are on a lower step) and protecting your kin by limiting outside feeding into the particular facet of the process we’re into (war!).

At present we could be in a race between developing true AI (or artificial super intelligence, or artificial life as I call it), which is the next lower entropy step for a super intelligent evolutionary process, and reaching our self destruction great filter. Best of luck.
